Out Now: ‘The Warlock of Firetop Mountain’, ‘Dungeon Rushers’, ‘Chief Puzzle Officer’, ‘MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL’, ‘Puff’, ‘RPG Djinn Caster’, ‘Soul Knight’, ‘Die By Died’, ‘Toaster Swipe’ and More

We’ve got yet another slammed week of new iOS game releases. Can I just have, like, ONE week where I can play through some stuff in my backlog? I seriously have considered taking vacation time just to do something like that. Anyway, it’s a good problem to have, I guess. This week, the long-awaited digital adaptation of classic gamebook The Warlock of Firetop Mountain has arrived as has the Mi-Clos-published turn-based dungeon crawler Dungeon Rushers. The strangely-titled single-player take on PongMUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL has been well-received so far, and even though I’m not a huge RPG fan the action RPG Djinn Caster has really held my attention. Chief Puzzle Officer offers up some match-3 with heavy online multiplayer components, and Die By Died is probably the best Castlevania-style action platformer that I’ve played in quite some time. Oh, and don’t forget about Soul Knight, which actually launched late last week but is so freaking good I had to make sure it made it on this week’s list. There’s just too much good stuff this week, so check out the full list of games below and let us know which games you’ll be picking up in our Discord chat or in the comments section!

‘Mini Metro’ Update Adds Endless Mode Drops the Price

Mini Metro [$2.99] is a fantastic game that has gotten rave reviews from both gaming outlets and people outside the gaming world. So, I’m pretty sure no one will complain that the game’s latest update, which just went live, adds another way to play the game. The new Endless Mode has added the ability to play with your toy trains forever without having to stress about anything. You can either start playing the Endless Mode by continuing a normal game after the game ends or by selecting Endless from the mode screen. Here’s your chance to drive trains and chill.

In addition to the Endless Mode, the update adds more music from Mateo Lugo, the composer from Reigns. These new compositions will play in San Francisco, Seoul, and Shanghai. And Mini Metro is now 40% off, so you have no excuse not to grab it.

New ‘Skylanders’ Turn-Based RPG Mobile Game in Development

The Skylanders franchise has made a ton of money for Activision, and even though the craze has definitely died a bit in the last couple of years, Skylanders continue to be ever-present. We’ve played a few Skylanders games on mobile, but most were ports rather than games developed specifically for mobile. Now, It looks like we are getting a Skylanders game developed specifically for mobile in early 2018. The game will be developed by Com2u,s and it won’t be the usual toy-to-game kind of thing; instead, this one will be a turn-based RPG of sorts that will focus on real-time PvP.

That’s pretty much all the information we have on the game. The Skylanders franchise definitely has plenty of characters that would work great in an RPG, so hopefully the end result will be entertaining.

‘Pokemon GO’ Joins ‘Pokemon Day’ Celebration With a Pikachu Hunt

February 27th is a big day for Pokemon fans everywhere since it marks the day the very first Pokemon games launched in Japan. The year was 1996, and it became the starting point for the craze that is Pokemon games. In celebration of Pokemon Day, our favorite Pokemon mobile game, Pokemon GO [Free], will join in with one fun event. From February 26th at 1:00 PM PST to March 6th at 1:00 PM PST, any Pikachu you encounter while out hunting Pokemon will be wearing a festive party hat. If you manage to catch one of those hat-wearing Pikachu, he will keep his party hat forever, which is good for those who like collecting and bragging.

Outside this promotion, Pokemon Day won’t affect Pokemon GO in any other way, at least based on what they have announced so far. So unless we hear something else, enjoy your Pikachu hunt.

The ‘Ys Chronicles’ Games are On Sale to Celebrate the PlayStation 4 Launch of ‘Ys Origin’

When it comes to action-RPGs, the Ys series from Nihon Falcom is one of the most reliable thrill-rides around. Focusing on fast-paced action and challenging boss fights, the Ys games have a feel quite unlike most other games in the genre. As you would expect with a series this long in the tooth, the worldwide releases have been handled by a number of companies. For mobile gamers, Dotemu has been the main face for the franchise. They’ve ported the PC versions of Ys Chronicles 1 [$2.99] and Ys Chronicles 2 [$2.99] over to smartphones over the last couple of years, and just today, they released a port of the awesome Ys Origin on Sony’s PlayStation 4.

But what good is a PlayStation 4 release to iOS gamers, right? We don’t know if Ys Origin will ever come to mobile, but here’s why you should care about this release right now. Because to celebrate the launch of that game, Dotemu has put the iOS versions of the Ys Chronicles games on sale for half their usual prices. Ys Chronicles 1 has only had one sale before, and it was a full year ago. Ys Chronicles 2 has never been on sale before now. Basically, you can grab both games for the price of one right now, and given that the games go naturally with one another, it’s a good chance to pick them up for cheap. If you want more details on both games, you can read my reviews of both the first game and the second game.

I’m not sure how long the sale will be going on, but if you have to think too hard about getting the first two Ys Chronicles games for such a low price, you are thinking much too hard, my friend. They may be remakes of a couple of oldies, but they’re faster-paced and more exciting than most action-RPGs released today. Oh, and if you have a PlayStation 4, you should probably grab Ys Origin. It is also the fancy cat’s pajamas, I assure you.

Build and Explore Dungeons in ‘Dungeon Rushers’ Now Available on Mobile

Mi-Clos Studio and Studio Goblinz have released their dungeon crawler Dungeon Rushers [$4.99] onto iOS. While the title makes it sound like some kind of RPG endless runner, it’s nothing of the sort. It’s a team-combat RPG that started out on PC before its eventual mobile beta test and now release on iOS and Android. The game has you uncovering a dungeon, tile by tile, searching for treasure, and either avoiding encounters…or engaging with them.

There’s a ton of things to do beyond just the main campaign. There’s an online arena mode to take on other players. You can play in customized dungeons and invite other players to play in them for yourself.

Combining the team-based combat, with the exploration, and then all the replay value elements Goblinz has thrown in, there’s the potential to waste a lot of time here in Dungeon Rushers. Check out the game’s forum thread if you’re interested in this one. Do note that all the skins are free for the first 3 days of release, so there’s benefits to getting in early if you’re intrigued.

This Week’s ‘Hearthstone’ Tavern Brawl Is ‘Cloneball’ – All about Random Legendaries

One of the thing I love about Hearthstone‘s [Free] Tavern Brawls is the ability to play with cards not in my collection, and this week’s Cloneball – a repeat from June – let’s me play with a ton of Legendaries, so what’s not to like? Okay, there are some things that aren’t great about this Brawl, but I’ll come to that in a bit. Cloneball gives you a deck of random legendaries, each cloned four times. You also get multiple copies of Offensive Play, a spell that makes the next legendary card you play – and each of its other copies – cheaper by 3 mana. Deciding when to play that spell often makes the difference between winning and losing.

The problem with the Brawl is the quality of Hearthstone‘s legendaries is very uneven. I just played against someone with Kel’Thuzad and Alexstrasza while I had Millhouse Manastorm and a few other crappy ones. As you can guess, it didn’t go very well for me. However, given that we don’t have to build a deck for this one, you can brawl again as soon as you lose, so that makes up for the RNG a bit. The Brawl is live now, so enjoy your legendaries.

‘Chief Puzzle Officer’ is Now Available Worldwide on iOS

After a long and wind release on iOS caused by some last-minute delays, Chief Puzzle Officer [Free] is now available on iOS. While it is a match-3 game, the clever trick is that the game has real-time cooperative multiplayer. You and 3 other players are working together on the same board, making matches to trigger attacks against a single enemy. This forms the basis of the game, with AI allies in the singleplayer events to help ou out.

Along the way, you’ll upgrade your puzzle megacorp, get new heroes for your deck while upgrading the best heroes. You can join guilds and take them on for corporate supremacy. Our forums were big on the beta version of the game, and now with the iOS version worldwide, everyone can check this interesting take on match-3 out for themselves. At worst, it has no energy system and a ton of potential waifus, so it can’t be all bad. Keep an eye on the forum thread for this game if you’re playing and want to discuss with others.

If You Enjoyed ‘Fire Emblem Heroes’, Here are Some Other Games to Check Out

A lot of players are discovering (or re-discovering) the joys of Fire Emblem through the recent release of Nintendo’s Fire Emblem Heroes [Free]. Enough people gave the game a try that I’ve been seeing some natural questions popping up in various places, including the TouchArcade Forums and the TouchArcade Discord server. Some people liked the game and are looking for more like it. Others like certain parts of the game, but would rather have a premium experience and are wondering if such a thing exists on iOS. Well, let it never be said that TouchArcade likes to leave a cry for recommendations hanging. For your consideration, I’ve put together a list of games for those whose SRPG passions have been stimulated by Fire Emblem Heroes and are hungry for more.

Terra BattleTerra Battle

Terra Battle, Free This free-to-play strategy game from the creator of Final Fantasy is, in my opinion, better than Fire Emblem Heroes in almost every way. Like that game, it offers small maps with bite-sized battles, tons of collectible characters, and a lot of interesting party-building options. It’s also quite friendly for a free-to-play game, with plenty of content that will keep you playing without asking you to take out your wallet. It’s slightly more complex than Fire Emblem Heroes, but it’s worth investing yourself into. REVIEW

Phantom of the KillPhantom of the Kill

Phantom of the Kill, Free Gumi’s take on this genre doesn’t even try to hide the source of its inspiration. It’s Fire Emblem to a tee, all the way down to borrowing the exact same weapon triangle of strengths and weaknesses. It’s also Fire Emblem filtered through a free-to-play social RPG set-up, and now looks rather forward-thinking in the wake of Fire Emblem Heroes. It’s not quite as polished or fair as Nintendo’s take, but of all the games on this list, it’s probably the most similar to Fire Emblem Heroes. REVIEW

The First Tactics (SRPG)The First Tactics (SRPG)

The First Tactics (SRPG), $0.99 This one is pretty rough in a lot of ways, but the tactical gameplay is surprisingly satisfying. While it very much feels like a game designed as a free-to-play title that was shifted to a paid app late in development, it’s a pretty fair effort for the price it sells for. The localization, such as it is, is quite poor, and the game really does a lousy job of explaining itself, but take some time to get over its quirks and you’ll find a pretty good homage from a clear fan of the genre. REVIEW

Partia, $3.99 Let’s say you don’t want any part of that free-to-play stuff or elements inspired by it. Let’s say Fire Emblem Heroes simply had you pining for the good old days of playing Fire Emblem on your Game Boy Advance. Well, you might want to check out the Partia games. There are two of them so far, and even a brief glimpse at the screenshots should tell you where this series is coming from. There are no fancy combat scene transitions and the number of stages is relatively small compared to some of the others on this list, but at the end of it all, Partia is a Fire Emblem homage made by Fire Emblem fans for Fire Emblem fans, something surely of interest to some readers. REVIEW

Princess And KnightPrincess And Knight

Princess And Knight, $4.99Princess And Knight is a really great effort from a Korean developer named Team Soft Ice Cream. The story takes a stronger focus in this game compared to some of the other titles I’ve listed so far, but that doesn’t mean the tactical battles are wanting. There are some really great scenario designs in this game, forcing you to play carefully if you want to pull out a victory. As is the case with many of the indie entries on this list, it’s not as slick as Nintendo’s game, but the mechanics are solid, the battle set-ups are interesting, and the story is fairly enjoyable to follow. REVIEW

Swords of AnimaSwords of Anima

Swords of Anima, $2.99 While the localization is a little out there at times, Swords of Anima offers a nice SRPG experience in a relatively premium package. The art is really nice in this game, and the characters are kind of wacky in the way that Fire Emblem‘s casts often are. There’s nothing too fancy to the gameplay, but it will certainly ring a familiar bell for fans of Nintendo’s series. It’s also a bit easier and less complex than many of the other games on this list. A good choice if you’re somewhat new to the genre, with alternate difficulty settings to satisfy those who are more experienced. REVIEW

Tactics MaidenTactics Maiden

Tactics Maiden, Free I’m not ranking the games on this list, but if I were, Tactics Maiden would be near the top. With an emphasis on capturing and holding strategic points, Tactics Maiden feels like a lovely blend of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. I consider this game and its predecessors in the Kingturn series to be essential purchases for any SRPG-loving iOS owner. It’s a little different from Fire Emblem, but it scratches a lot of similar itches. It’s free to try out the first handful of maps, with a single $4.99 IAP to unlock the rest. REVIEW

Demon's RiseDemon's Rise

Demon’s Rise, $7.99Demon’s Rise isn’t all that similar to Fire Emblem. It’s closer to Final Fantasy Tactics, and even closer still to a fantasy-flavored XCOM. But with solid SRPG fundamentals, tons of content, and lots of fun party-building options, I think Demon’s Rise has strong appeal for any fan of the genre. A lot of creativity has gone into some of the mission designs in this one, and you never quite know what you’re going to have to pull off next. REVIEW

Mercenaries Saga2Mercenaries Saga2

Mercenaries Saga2, $2.99 While this is an obvious homage to Yasumi Matsuno’s Tactics series of SRPGs, that road also leads back to Fire Emblem if we follow it far enough along. This is a nice, relatively light, no-nonsense SRPG with a fun leveling system and a decent story. No, you won’t be collecting a lot of cute girls or anything like that, but if your interest in Fire Emblem leans into the tactical battles and tales of warring kingdoms, this will be right up your alley. REVIEW

Banner Saga - Viking Strategy Tactics RPG - Best Indie Game of 2014Banner Saga - Viking Strategy Tactics RPG - Best Indie Game of 2014

Banner Saga – Viking Strategy Tactics RPG – Best Indie Game of 2014, $4.99The Banner Saga probably doesn’t need a lot of introductions, but just in case you haven’t gotten in on it yet, here’s a reminder. While the bulk of the gameplay involves the turn-based tactical battle system, you’ll also have to take care of your caravan and make some tough narrative choices. Simply an amazing story, and the atmosphere is second to none on this list. Just be aware that it’s not nearly as “sunshine and rainbows” as most of the Fire Emblem games you might be used to. REVIEW

Record of Agarest WarRecord of Agarest War

Record of Agarest War, $12.99 Okay, recent Fire Emblem fans, I hear you. All of these games sound great, but where are the waifus? Well, if that’s your favorite part of Fire Emblem, you could do worse than giving the Agarest series of SRPGs a shot. This first game is really long and has a ton of complicated systems to learn and play around with. While I have some issues with a few of its mechanics, its story aims high with a tale that crosses multiple generations. And where there are multiple generations in an RPG, there are probably marriage options. That’s just the case here, so if that be your jam, enjoy yourselves, you cheeky little devils. REVIEW

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS: THE WAR OF THE LIONS, $13.99 No list of quality SRPGs on iOS would be complete without this game. It’s big, well-designed, and full of great characters, systems, battles, and every other goodie you could want out of a game like this. A stunning presentation with some great sprites and amazing music are balanced out with an epic story of heroism and its true costs. The job system alone could keep you busy for over 100 hours. REVIEW

While I’m sure many of our readers own some or most of the games on this list, hopefully there are at least one or two recommendations worth looking into. And if you own them and haven’t played them yet, consider this a reminder. This is a very healthy genre on iOS, and one where indies have proven they can punch at the same weight as much bigger dogs. So while you’re waiting for your stamina to restore or for Nintendo to deliver new content in Fire Emblem Heroes, go ahead and give some of these games a try.
